Water: Water daily right after transplanting, then reduce watering to allow root systems to develop deeply, prevent disease, and for sweeter flavored fruits. Water at the base of the plant, avoid getting water on foliage.

Soil notes: Rich garden soil, compost amendment beneficial, avoid fertilizing until roots systems are strongly established
Fruit: Dark reddish brown with green shoulders, beefsteak
Notes: Indeterminate variety, require staking or trellising, and regular suckering. This Russian tomato was named in honor of the African American actor, athlete, singer, linguist and outspoken activist for racial equity and social justice. He spent his final years in west Philadelphia.
