Pisum sativum, Risser Sickle Pea [SEEDS]
Pisum sativum, Risser Sickle Pea [SEEDS]
Culture notes: This prolific, tasty pea variety is known to have been present in England as early as 1789. Bartram’s Garden received the seed from William Woys Weaver who says in his description in the book Heirloom Vegetable Gardening that the variety was widely grown in the colonial period in Pennsylvania gardens. It gets it’s name Risser sickle pea from Pennsylvania Dutch gardener Ida Shriner Risser who has most recently preserved the variety. It’s sickle shaped pods are good to harvest young as snap peas in the pod or wait to harvest as shell peas a bit later. We sow this pea as early as the ground can be worked - mid March here in Philadelphia, and give it a trellis to lean on as it’s vines will reach a few feet long.
