Culture notes: This ornamental, annual flower with mallow-like blossoms that open at noon and close at dawn; distinctive, olive green foliage with serrated edges, grows from 1.5-4' tall. This unusual plant native to South Asian Tropics was rarely cultivated in America and is a member of the chocolate family with brownish-green stems and mallow-like blossoms. It makes a handsome accent plant in the garden. Thomas Jefferson noted the scarlet pentapetes variety in his Garden Book.
