Soil: Prefers moist, organically rich, well-draining soils, tolerant of a wide range of soils, neutral (≈7).
Notes: Species plants are generally not sold in commerce today because of it's thorns, and messy seed pods. However, ths pulp around the seeds is highly attractant of bees, moths, butterflies, and small mammals. It is the host plant for the larvae of the Silver-spotted Skipper moth, and is alsohighly salt, wind and drought tolerant once established, and resistant to damage by deer and pollution.
