Culture notes: This is the sunshiny little pot marigold that’s been happily self sowing in the kitchen garden at Bartram’s every year for a couple of decades. It’s a single, yellow flower with good resin content for making concoctions to help soothe and heal inflamed or irritated skin, chronic upset stomachs, or to boost a sluggish lymph system . Butter yellow petals make a pretty addition to salads or other dishes. It forms a little mound about 1’x1’. Calendula blooms nearly around the whole calendar year, often from April through December, dazzling the bees. We encourage this by sowing in a few successions through the summer. To start seed, simply lightly cover with soil, gently tamp in and keep evenly moist until germination – about a week. Works well sowing seeds directly or starting inside on a sunny windowsill.

Sun: Full sun to part shade
Water: Medium
Bloom time: April to frost
Soil notes: Average, moderately fertile, well-drained soils
