Culture notes: Marigolds are indigenous to Guatemala and Mexico. Known in their native homes as Cempasuchil, K’etsikarhani, or Cempoaxotchil. In these regions they remain culturally significant for their use in decorating gravesites and home altars - their bright colors and strong fragrance attract the dead to ofrendas waiting for them. Marigold was collected in the early 1600 by European colonists and then spread quickly throughout Europe and Northern Africa, and by the early 1800s was well known in American gardens. Harlequin is a variety developed in the 1870s. Prized for it’s festive golden petals which are striped with maroon bars, it’s lacy foliage and dainty flowers form a bushy habit that shines out in the cool autumn garden. To start indoors, lightly cover seed 6-8 weeks before frost or sow outdoors directly as soon as danger of frost has passed. Give each plant a foot of space in the garden and deadhead to increase blooms.
