Culture notes: Heirloom variety brought to North America in 1793 by Creole refugees fleeing the Haitian Revolution. These tomatoes seem to appear in paintings by various members of the Peale family of Philadelphia in this time period. One of the Peale sons also painted William Bartram’s portrait - so we hypothesize this variety could likely have been grown at Bartram’s Garden in its early introduction to Philadelphia. Start indoors 4-6 weeks before setting out in warm soil.

Sun: Full sun
Water: Medium - water at the roots, keeping the leaves dry
Soil notes: Average, well-drained soils
